Snack Media is spending the run-up to the 2019 Rugby World Cup taking you through the tournament, the teams and even the terms of one of the world’s most popular sports. Our eleventh blog looks at the All Black’s flanker, Ardie Savea.
When it comes to naming a World XV, the team is usually dominated by All Blacks. Such is their superiority and class that they boast three players in their current squad that have been named World Player of the Year over the past decade, captain Kieran Read, Brodie Retallick and two-time winner Beauden Barrett.
However, one player that is in sensational form currently, and easily one of the best players on the planet is Ardie Savea. The flanker has just come from a brilliant season with the Hurricanes in Super Rugby, and looks to have carried that good form into the Rugby Championship with his country.
Capable of playing anywhere in the back-row, it is hard to determine what Savea’s best quality is. Ruthless and tireless in defence, a dog at the breakdown and a monstrous ball-carrier, he is a complete player. Perhaps his speed and power with ball in hand is his best quality, but the other areas of his game are not lacking.
What’s more is the 25-year-old’s work rate means he is a persistent thorn in the opposition’s side and stands out to anyone watching. He has a huge say in how his team performs, and if he is on song at the World Cup, the All Blacks will be a very hard team to beat.
