Sports clubs around the world enjoy some April Fools’ fun

April Fools’ is here and that means it’s time to be wildly entertained by the most imaginative pranks people and companies across the globe have to offer. One industry that loves April Fools’ day is the world of sport and this year is no different as we round up the best pranks.

City’s Scare

In a twist that had Liverpool fans ready to take to the streets in celebration after a message on reddit read ““BREAKING! Incredible scenes @FA HQ tonight, @ManCity have been DOCKED ten points for breaching rules re: recruitment of underage players, effectively handing the title to Liverpool!”, fans were quick to realise that they had fallen for an April Fools’ prank.

Bristol is…Blue?

Who better to prank than your closest rivals? Bristol City announced on Twitter that in celebration of their 110-year anniversary of their appearance in the FA Cup final, their 2019/20 away kits would be all blue. Conveniently their rivals, Bristol Rovers FC also wear an all blue kit. Guess this will be one confusing match next season?!

New Zealand sign some new players

As if they needed any more help…The All Blacks posted a story on their official website announcing the signing of Hollywood stars Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson and Jason Momoa on developmental contracts. “I’ve been in the ring with Hulk Hogan and John Cena and shared the screen with some of Hollywood’s biggest stars, but that’s nothing compared to packing down in the All Blacks scrum! I’m ready to rock. Let’s go!” said Johnson. Now that would add quite a bit of flair to the World Cup this autumn!

Carabao (Camera) Cup?

In a generation where athletes kill for the perfect angle on any picture, the EFL has ‘officially’ announced that next season’s Carabao Cup will ‘see the introduction of corner flags with inbuilt camera phones as competition sponsor Carabao Energy Drink look to take fan engagement to the next level’. Maybe the perfect selfie is possible?

Holloway makes career change

In one of the more creative pranks of the day, rugby club Worcester Warriors announced the signing of their new kicking coach who happens to be… Ian Holloway? A tweet by the club announced the signing of the Bristol Rovers legend as video footage shows him taking players through practice runs. Now that would be quite a switch in careers.
