There’s only one week before Christmas and once again brands have been hitting our favourite social media platforms with creative content celebrating the festive season

But before we look forward, let’s look back and check out the content that’s already been done in the Christmas build-up.

Starbucks kicks off the season to be jolly

At the beginning of November, Starbucks UK announced the “official start” to the Christmas period by bringing back the red cup. And of course, at a time like this, a branded hashtag on Twitter was needed becoming the second brand behind Coke to do such a thing.

In creative a virtual wave on social media, the Starbucks hashtag emoji #RedCups (or #RedCup) stayed top of the trends list for a couple of and it’s still being used on Twitter.

Asda bets on Tumblr

For its Christmas marketing campaign, Asda has used Tumblr to target people with varied content featuring tips, recipes, ideas gifts, and pets. The supermarket brand really pushes the ideals of ‘bringing the family together’, ‘having fun’ and ‘enjoying food’ on the photo blogging platform.

The advent YouTube calendar by Manchester City

For the fourth year in a row, the football club has launched its own advent calendar. Only available on YouTube, a fun moment including City’s players is posted each day. Some guests like the Harlem Globetrotters have even joined the campaign. Last year the calendar was a huge success with more than 2 million views. Take a look at the second episode: the Christmas pullover race!

Pret unveiles the first Christmas present

To promote its Christmas lunch sandwich, Pret A Manger launched the #ChritsmasLunch campaign. The idea was to create a real expectation from consumers and encourage them to the “save the date”. A series of social posts encouraged social users to join a Facebook event “The Return of the Christmas Sandwich” on 10 November to unwrap their first gift, a sandwich.

Choose your Christmas food with Aldi

Throughout the Christmas period, Aldi UK launched #AldiFavouriteThings, an easy template to ask to Twitter users what they want for Christmas and allow them to vote (using retweets, likes or replies). Simple but efficient.

It may not be a strictly social media campaign but of course we have to highlight the most popular Christmas TV ads of this year. John Lewis, Sainsbury’s and Warburtons are leading the rankings. A mixture between humour and emotion, only Christmas can create this feeling!
