Football Dominating On & Off the Field

Some of the largest followed teams in the world also have the most followers when it comes to social media. But is it because of the amount of fans they have in general? Or is it the content that they post on their accounts that make them the most followed? Success of a team is obviously a reason for some to have so many followers on social platforms, but some are beginning to gain followers based on their creativity.

Social media was once a space to post information about their team (events, success, etc.), but now it is a space to interact with fans/customers and be creative with the things being discussed. Different contests, Q&A’s, and surveys have allowed for the organizations to interact with customers easier and more often, but thinking of new things to do to retain them and gain more.

When looking at the most followed sports franchises worldwide, we can see that most of them are extremely successful when it comes to the playing field. With five Premier League teams in the Top 10, and four other football clubs as well, it shows that football dominates the sports social media realm.

The continued success of these teams, the global television coverage that the Premier League receives (unlike many other sports leagues), and the digital touch points all help in creating the large following they have on social sites. It may not be through creative and witty posts where they gain Twitter and Facebook followers, but just the fact that they are some of the most popular and watched teams on the face of the Earth.

With the Los Angeles Lakers of the NBA being the only non-football team in the Top 10, it shows how HOT basketball is becoming worldwide.

Right now, the most followed aren’t doing anything special on social media to give them so many followers. It’s just that they’ve always had a large fan base. But, may we see more basketball teams take over these football powerhouses? Will the more creative team accounts finally make a move? We will just have to wait and see.
