Twitter has established itself as the platform to express opinions, share thoughts and access up-to-date, relevant content.
Its format is remarkably simple; and simplicity is the main reason for its success. The medium allows fans to establish a closer-than-ever-before bond with their heroes, and this what brands have cottoned onto in their millions.
There is etiquette to follow, though. Social marketing is something of a balancing act – bonds have all-too-easily been broken by too many tweets being posted at once, or a brand using a too-large ratio of automated tweets.
Once a social content strategy is in place, and Twitter etiquette has been understood, it’s time for brands to start attracting new followers. Here are a few tips on how to do just that:
Content is king
Write engaging, interesting copy, or let a content marketing agency help you. It’s fine to piggyback on hot topics, but make sure your content is unique – so adopt a fresh, thought-provoking angle.
Above all, avoid spam – nothing is quite as capable at turning readers off.
The magic of the re-tweet
Brand awareness and promotion is simple on Twitter thanks to the re-tweet button, but sometimes your followers will need some gentle encouragement. Tell them about it, perhaps incentivise them to use it through competitions, and soon your number of followers will increase.
One word of advice – familiarise yourself with Twitter lingo. That means using ‘RT’ instead of ‘re-tweet’.
Follow relevant accounts
It’s a Twitter rule of thumb that when you follow somebody, they generally follow you back. If you follow people and brands who post similar and/or relevant content to yours, it’s an excellent way to publicise your brand.
By building up a core base of followers this way, it’s likely they’ll keep revisiting your tweets in a quest for useful information – which makes it more likely to attract re-tweets and mentions.
