On his blog, Twitter has announced that they’ve acquired Magic Pony Technology, a machine learning startup that can automatically sharpen low-resolution and blurred real-time video. Magic Pony can improve pictures taken on low-resolution camera. Twitter has claimed it will help to enhance their strength in live and video and open up lots of exciting creative possibilities for social media. CEO Jack Dorsey says that the move will help the company reach its goal of “making Twitter the first and the best place to see what’s happening in the world.”

New ways to tap into video on Twitter

Twitter and Vine are extending the length of videos to 140 seconds. Although it is available to all users on Twitter, only a few users are selected on Vine. Previously, Twitter supported videos of 30 seconds maximum and Vines up to 6 seconds. Select publishers will continue to be able to post videos up to 10 minutes long. Furthermore, users are now able to see more suggested videos by tapping on a video Tweet or Vine on the timeline.

Translation feature on Instagram

Instagram has declared they will add in the coming months a new translation feature. Users will be able to tap a “See Translation” button to make sure they know exactly what a bio, caption or comment says. It will permit to keep pace with users around the world and attract more interactions. Instagram currently supports 24 languages, but it did explain that older comments and captions may not be privy to the update.

Half a billion monthly users on Instagram

Instagram’s growth has been very encouraging in the past 2 years with 400 million monthly users in September. But now, they have reached the 500 million monthly users milestone with more than 300 million of whom use the social platform every single day. Only 20% of Instagram users live in U.S.A. The social media company says that 95 million photos and videos are shared every day with 4.2 billion likes on average.
