Wearable technology is growing at a faster pace than most expected. People are now wearing smart watches and using smart phones to regularly check their social media accounts. This is all going to continue to develop, as some big news has come forward from the fashion industry.

Rosella have taken wearable technology to a new level

A company called Rosella, based in England, have taken “wearable technology” to a new level by fusing technology with clothing garments. Mobile phones will be a thing of the past, as the garments around in 10-15 years will be able to update Twitter, Facebook and make calls. Losing your phone in a rush will never happen again and neither will struggling to connect to the internet, as people will be walking around as wi-fi hotspots.

Salvo from Ralph Lauren

Ralph Lauren are also about to start selling their “Salvo”, a sports shirt that can monitor heartbeat, stress levels and respiration. This technology is coming around quickly, and brands are jumping on board.

This will have an impact on social media as it will enable new ways to engage with each other. People could be tweeting from jackets and posting to Facebook from a pair of gloves, meaning there could be limitless possibilities on what big social media companies could do with the correct approach. Is this a good idea though? Wearable garments do sound exciting and interesting, although how many people will actually buy, and more importantly for the brand, wear it? People have become so used to updating their social accounts via phones. Many people may not feel comfortable walking about in an item of clothing that has wiring or other technology inside.

On the other hand, it is a brave move in the fashion industry. A statistic found by EuroMonitor found that in 2014, Britons spent £4.5bn on smart phones last year compared to £4.3bn on designer labels. This shows that the fashion industry know what Britons want, and that they are trying to create new ways of appealing to their own audience as well as appeal to the wider audience of technology know-hows. This shows that people are set on social media using the methods they know and love on popular smart phones such as Iphone and Samsung Galaxy.

In conclusion, whatever the approach to how the fashion industry wants to further its audience, wearable garments will create a new wave of technology. App developers will want to harness the new powers available, brands will want to get involved and the whole of social media will be sent to a different device.
