Twitter is a dangerous thing for footballers. A platform where you can express your views on referees, other players, managers and fans – on the internet, where everything goes viral in seconds. How much trouble can that cause? Well, from Ferdinand’s controversial tweet about Ashley Cole to Babel posting a photo of referee Howard Webb in a Manchester United shirt – the answer is: a lot. Despite the trouble it generates, we all follow them for their entertaining feuds, funny comments and even just to hear if they’re about to go to bed. Here are the top five we think you should definitely follow:
Joey Barton
With over two-million twitter followers, this is a stage that Joey Barton performs on regularly. Known for his footballer feuds with the likes of David Beckham and Didi Haaman, he is very open in his views both football and non-football related. Recently, however, he is providing some heavily interesting insights into his life (watching The Notebook), but luckily for us he is still not hiding his controversial football opinions:
Problem with British football is the coaching. Look at home nation coaches? Hodgson. Coleman. Strachan. O’Neil. Serouisly?

Leroy Fer
The Norwich City player does not rival Barton in terms of his attitude and anger, but he’s definitely an interesting one to follow. If nothing else he will get all Norwich City fans warmed up and ready for the next game with constant, enthusiastic posts on match day and support to his fellow teammates pre and post match. Oh, and he’s humble – makes a change from your stereotypical footballer.
Great 3 points today! Fans were amazing again! Got the #Barclays #MOTM award, but it was a real team effort! Great job @NorwichCityFC #Love

Cesc Fabregas
If you like reading some football banter or even the odd bit of Spanish then Fabregas is the person for you to follow. With well over five million followers he knows what the fans want to read. Granted recently it has got a bit ‘samey’ hearing about how Barcelona keeps on winning, but fair play to him – I’d be bragging about it too!
8 victories of 8, good job team! / 8 de 8, seguimos sumando, buen trabajo equipo! / 8 de 8, seguim sumant, bon partit equip! #fcblive

Rio Ferdinand
Every football fan, whether it be Manchester United or just England should be part of the 4 million that follow Mr Ferdinand. Football, nights out or even the X-factor – Rio is there for you providing his insights, opinions and general life updates. If nothing else, this following tweet is a reason to get on twitter right now and press that ‘follow’ button.
Teeth feeling brand new after visit to the dentist yesterday! Intense brushing from now on.. #FightingPlaque

Samir Nasri
He’s started to head a bit more towards instagram, but he’s still one our favourites on the old twitter. Best reason to follow him: the photos. You get photos of everything…you might as well be walking with him side by side through his life! Beautiful.
